'the country': Aboriginal people typically refer to their land as their "country" which implies the land itself plus everything connected to it people, language, environment, traditions, stories, spirituality. Indeed 'country' in Aboriginal English can be understood as being interchangeable with 'nation' in standard English. Note: Typically, rather than land belonging to them, Aboriginal people understand themselves as belonging to the land and themselves in an inseparable relationship with it. |
